Regional high-resolution spatiotemporal gravity modeling from GRACE data using spherical wavelets

چکیده
[1] We determine a regional spatiotemporal gravity field over northern South America including the Amazon region using GRACE inter-satellite range-rate measurements by application of a wavelet-based multiresolution technique. A major advantage of this method is that we are able to represent the Amazon hydrological signals in form of time series of detail signals with level-dependent temporal resolution: the coarser structures generally require only ten days, whereas the medium and finer details are computable from one month of data. To this end, we employ the basic property of multiresolution representations, which is to split a signal into detail signals, each related to a specific resolution level and computable from data covering a specific part of the spectrum. Our results, which for the first time fully exploit the spatial and temporal resolutions of GRACE data in modeling Amazon hydrological fluxes, are in good agreement with hydrological models and GPS-derived height variations. Regional gravity modeling in terms of spherical base functions
This article provides a survey on modern methods of regional gravity field modeling on the sphere. Starting with the classical theory of spherical harmonics, weoutline the transition towards space-localizing methods such as spherical splines and wavelets. Special emphasis is given to the relations among these methods, which all involve radial base functions. Moreover, we provide extensive applic...
متن کاملFault Strike Detection Using Satellite Gravity Data Decomposition by Discrete Wavelets: A Case Study from Iran
Estimating the gravity anomaly causative bodies boundary can facilitate the gravity field interpretation. In this paper, 2D discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is employed as a method to delineate the boundary of the gravity anomaly sources. Hence, the GRACE’ satellite gravity data is decomposed using DWT. DWT decomposites a single approximation coefficients into four distinct components: the appr...
متن کاملComparison of Regional and Global GRACE Gravity Field Models at High Latitudes
In this study we address the question of whether regional gravity field modeling techniques of GRACE data can offer improved resolution over traditional global spherical harmonic solutions. Earlier studies into large, equatorial river basins such as the Amazon, Zambezi and others showed no obvious distinction between regional and global techniques, but this may have been limited by the fact tha...

With the continued threat from climate change, population growth and followed by increasing water demand, the need for hydrological data with high spatial resolution and proper time coverage to be felt more than ago. Therefore, having data such as terrestrial water storage changes and groundwater level changes with high resolution spatial helps to plan and make decisions for water resource mana...

Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...
